about

david about his photography

I’m an unpretentious man. And my approach to my photography is a humble one – I just have an urge to document the world around me. I don’t see myself as an artist – I’m a photographer and a documentarian – it is my duty to record life, and to try to understand what is going on around me at any one moment in time. I’d like to think that my photography can speak for itself but what else can I say other than I take pictures because I want to, I like it, because I get pleasure from it. A photographer can’t help but be a voyeur and intruder – we selfishly take what we want and move on. However, despite this uncomfortable truth, I don’t only take pictures to gratify my own narcissistic indulgences – I also believe that photography offers viewers intimate glimpses into the lives of ordinary people.

Social documentary photography provides an irreplaceable testimony of our histories. It’s an extraordinary way of raising awareness unhindered by barriers of language, culture and politics. Its emotive power has the ability to expose the truth in all its nakedness. I believe it’s important that my work is not only emotionally moving but also informative offering a different perspective on all the mundane things in life as well as those that are incomprehensible. Anyone can take a picture of poverty; it’s easy to focus on the dirt and hurt of the poor. It’s much harder to pry under that dirt and reveal the beauty and dignity of the people. I want my work to tell a story that moves us beyond pity. I don’t want to speak for my sitters; I hope to give them a voice so that they can tell their own stories – while coincidentally providing us, the viewer, with an opportunity to reflect.

I especially like portraits. My sitters are there for me because they want to be there. I think of it as an act of communication between my subject, the viewer and me. I like to take portraits in the personal environment of the sitter. I believe, taking a portrait in the way I do, I'm able to learn something special about the person I photograph. Every person I photograph is aware that I'm taking their picture; they’re practically calling the shot! I leave it to them how much they want to reveal because taking ones portrait is a very personal experience. Everybody does it differently; every person is revealing different aspects of their personality, and to a different extent. I’m proud that the people I photograph invited me into their homes and lives. They all have names and stories to tell that they wanted to share with me.
